Does heritage overlay impact on the material used for a new roof?
- Yes. Depending on the type of overlay your house is situated on, you may be required to apply for a heritage permit from your local council. General conditions usually consist of replacing like-for-like materials.
- Yes. This requires a building permit as per VBA legislation. This process can be organised by the team at iFix Roofing.
TILE ROOF REPLACEMENTS

BUILDING PERMIT
Replacing a cement or terracotta tile roof with Zincalume, galvanised iron, or Colorbond necessitates obtaining a building permit. This process entails collaboration with a surveyor and an engineer to ensure appropriate modifications are made to the roof structure, bringing it up to the approved standards set by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). Engineering is essential to prevent roofing uplift, requiring engineer design certificates and securing a building permit through the VBA. All works must adhere to VBA standards and receive proper sign-off. Conversely, replacing like-for-like materials does not mandate a building permit.
Furthermore, the installation of new metal battens is obligatory, as it constitutes a change in roof structure, supported by the building permit. A licensed builder must oversee the permit application and possess relevant insurances to execute the works.
It remains the responsibility of both the trade professionals and homeowners to ensure all necessary permits and applications are obtained before commencing any work, whether involving heritage overlays or material alterations.

- In most cases yes. However this requires the removal of existing gutter and re-installation with the change of fall.
- We encourage all our clients to clean their gutters at the end of every season as this helps prevent blockages, rust and general breakdown of material.

Should my downpipes be steel or PVC?
- We recommend choosing the material that best suits your house and practicality. PVC is easy to remove and clean, however will not always visually tie in with your house. Colorbond downpipes come in a range of colours and sizes that can be matched to the style of your home, though aren’t as easy to remove and clean.
COLORBOND FASCIAS & BARGE
Colorbond fascia offer a functional substitute for conventional timber fascia. Their installation typically involves removing the existing fascia and, in some cases, eave sheets. Unlike traditional fascia, Colorbond fascia eliminate the need for regular painting and are resistant to rot and deterioration, making them ideal for withstanding Australia's challenging climate conditions.
In addition to Colorbond fascia, iFix Roofing provides Colorbond fascia covers designed to be installed directly over existing timber fascia. These covers offer added protection and ensure the longevity of your current fascia boards. We replace all fascia using Australian standard BlueScope steel in Colorbond, ensuring durability and quality in every installation.

Do I need to remove my old timber fascias to install Colorbond fascias?
- Yes. In order to install your new fascia the old (usually rotted) timber fascia requires removal. Alternatively, if the timber is in reasonable condition, a fascia cover can be installed directly over the top.
- Colorbond doesn’t require painting
